Watching the Generations Generate Heat

NbaOccasionally, people tell me that generational analysis is too philosophical -- that it doesn't translate easily into everyday life. What they're really searching for are concrete examples of how society and culture are significantly influenced by the the G.I.'s (1900-1924), Silent Generation (1925-1942), Baby Boomers (1943-196o), Generation X (1961-1981), and Millennials (1981-2002). These examples are abundant -- they're everywhere -- if we only take the time to think about why things play out the way they do. Allow me to share just one such example that recently captured my attention:

The 2006 National Basketball Association (NBA) Finals.

This year's NBA Finals are now over, and if you watched them, you witnessed something special. Whereas the NBA has lately been dominated by Gen X stars -- Shaquille O'Neal, Tim Duncan and Allen Iverson are just a few that come to mind -- the Millennials have officially arrived.
This year's series featured the Dallas Mavericks vs. the Miami Heat. The atmosphere was electric; the energy level was sky high, as each game took on the tone and tenor of a Herculean generational battle -- almost like a team of big brothers (with one exception) against a team of their surly siblings. Any family with competitive boys would have loved this series.

The Mavericks -- a team full of Millennials clawing and fighting to dethrone the Heat's veteran group of Gen X warriors -- did not play in a manner indicative of their nickname. They were a true team in every way. There was no lone gunman. The Mavs are a younger, edgier version of the Detroit Pistons of old. They have their "bad boys," but because their clout in the league still unestablished, they were not able to get away with any of the antics that those great Pistons teams used to contain Michael Jordan. The same kind of hard fouls and team-wide rough play led by Bill Laimbeer and Dennis Rodman proved extremely costly to this year's Dallas Mavericks. It cost them in the form of fines and suspensions. (Namely due to the vitriol of their truculent owner, Mark Cuban, that eccentric Generation X billionaire.) This team, the Mavs, perfectly represented Version 2 of the new generational prism that is now sweeping the NBA -- and the nation. These were Millennials working and playing with purpose. They were on the brink of a championship, just as many Millennials in the marketplace and in academia are on the brink of success, but their time has not yet come. The Millennials are the generation of future conquests, just as the Dallas Mavericks are the team of future championships.

Then there is the championship team, the Miami Heat. The Heat proved to be Version 1 of the NBA, and their success portends lessons that extend throughout society. In this team, you have a snapshot of the now -- the reality of why inter-generational collaboration results in winning. This is true in every arena, whether it's a business board of directors or a leadership team at a non-profit; and the Heat demonstrated that it is just as true in the arena of professional sports. Gary Payton, Alonzo Mourning, Shaquille O'Neal, and even Antoine Walker -- these were Gen X-ers whose days in the NBA are numbered. These warriors were all aware of the fact that this championship run could very well be their last and best hope for glory, so they came to grips with their limits (as even the best corporate and organizational Gen X leaders must do) and morphed into vital role players. In addition, you had Pat Riley, the idealist Baby Boomer who stepped down as General Manager to lead his team as coach.

Also on this team, you had one star Millennial, Dwayne Wade. If the Miami Heat were a ragtag group of warriors straight out of the movie "Lord of the Rings," (based on J.R.R. Tolkien's classic books) then Wade was the burden-carrying Hobbit willing to take on the responsibility of "dunking" the ring into Mt. Doom. (Taken a step further, this analogy could easily include Riley as Gandalf and the Gen X veterans as supporting trolls and fairies, not that any NBA player wants to be called a fairy.) Unlike some Millennials who are overeager for stardom, Wade was humble and submissive to a host of Gen X teammates on the Heat, starting with Shaq. Although Wade possesses extreme talent, the thing that stands out about him is his unique ability to defer glory to the previous generation.

For me, this moment of generational magic came to light during a post-game interview. ESPN reporter Steven A. Smith was asking his questions of both Wade and Shaq. Toward the end of the interview, Smith started to run down a list of Wade's accomplishments. His credentials seemed to swell with each sentence, and the list was impressive. Every viewer knew exactly where Smith was headed. He would compare Wade to Jordan. He would laud Wade as a messiah -- the savior of the Miami Heat of the NBA. It had happened before in countless interviews.

But Wade would have none of it. He shook his head, and his eyes were downcast in respect to the teammate at his side. He refused to let the reporter, Smith, compare him to Jordan. Wade seemed to be genuinely uncomfortable. Then the reporter finally popped his telegraphed question: "How do you feel about your accomplishments?" His target, however, had no time to respond. Shaq, the sage Gen X center who already had won three NBA titles, intercepted the question in a manner that gave weight to his generational partnership with the young, high-flying apprentice.
"He doesn't have to answer that question," said Shaq. "I will. I'm his publicist." As Shaq -- with emotion and sincerity -- began to list Wade's many outstanding qualities, I sat in front of my television dumbfounded. I was stunned. Shaq wasn't just naming his athletic accomplishments. He talked about Wade as a family man, about his compassion and his selflessness. Shaq said that Wade didn't have to speak; his game (and life) spoke for him.

"Lord of the Rings" fans might remember the end scene in "Return of the King." The newly crowned king admonishes the Hobbits for bowing down to him. "You bow to no man; it is we who bow to you." I was reminded of this kind of glory deferment when Shaq handed the MVP Award to Wade. Shaq even went as far as to swear his allegiance to him, saying that he would play by Wade's side any time. "And when I do next year," he stated, "we will win another championship."
Welcome to Version 1 of the NBA and of inter-generational magic. Enjoy it while you can. The future is rich, restless and hungry.

Do Not Be Deceived, God Cannot Be Punked!

Da_vinci_codeThe Di Vinci Code or “How Jesus got his groove back…”

That’s what the movie theatre marquee read.  “How Jesus got his groove back!”  I sat there and stared at it for a few minutes and actually contemplated throwing a brick through the window.

“How Jesus got his groove back.”  All over the world Moslems are rioting over cartoon depictions of the prophet Mohammad meanwhile it is open season on Christians.  In the last few months look at what we have had to put up with: Kyane West in a crown of thorns, Madonna on a cross and now the Di Vinci Code.

Hey did you catch one of the supporting from the film on the Today Show last week?  It was the dude that played Gandalf the Great in the Lord of the Rings, the famous British actor dude… Ian Mc something or other.  He was on with Matt Lauer and in a moment of supreme stupidness he said, “The Bible should be published with the word fiction stamped on it.  I mean, a fella walking on water?  Come now…”

Come now?

Do you know what the problem is?  People are stupid.  S-T-U-P-I-D.  For all of our technology, all of our advancement, people are still empty, confused and they don’t even know why!  Here is something to ponder.  More people read the Divinchi code last year than the New Testament of the Bible!  More people’s mind is open to fiction than to Biblical truth!

If Jesus were God, why wouldn’t he be able to walk on water?  Just because you don’t believe doesn’t give you the right to mock and ridicule the founder of the religion!  Let’s hear you say that about Islam and the Prophet Mohammad!  Assholes can be so brave when they disrespect Jesus!  That’s because his followers try to emulate their masters actions.  I have grown tired of the double standard but will I attack the attackers?

Don’t get me wrong.  I don’t think we have to fight for Jesus.  I think that God is perfectly capable of taking care of himself; I just want to be there when the excrement hits the fan.  I want to see the look on Ian Mc Stupid’s face when Jesus looks into his eyes.  Can you imagine?

And that is the problem.  Most people can’t imagine it because they don’t read their Bibles.  If you call yourself a Christian, it is time to get with the program.  Jesus didn’t have a wife and kids.  Do you know how I know?  The Bible doesn’t speak of it.  Jesus was the greatest phenomena to ever cross the horizon of this world.  He’s God’s son, he’s the sinner’s savior.  He’s the centerpiece of civilization, he’s unprecedented, he’s unparallel, he’s the loftiest ideal in literature, he is the principle personality in philosophy, he is he fundamental doctrine in true theology, he is the only one qualified to be an all sufficient savior.

And here is a secret:  If you know him your mind won’t be “open” to alternative stupidity.  You may want to occasionally throw the brick, but ultimately patients will win out.  The battle has already been won.  Check out the book of Roman Chapter 1: 18 – the end of he chapter.

Kyane, Madonna, Di Vinci fans… Don’t be fooled, God cannot be punked!

Mexican Immigration

Naked_protestIs this really the way to get what you want?  Didn't this type of protest go out of style in the 1960's?  Here's a question?  Where are the naked Mexican men who are protesting? I find this picture to be offensive!  Not because of the Immigration question, and not because of the fact that theses women are naked!
No, my offense is over the obvious...
These women are not just naked, they are overweight, unattractive and naked.

That's a deadly combination.

If you choose to get naked in public you should at least be fit and attractive.  Think of the children!  This country is already battling the "desease" known as obesity.  Why are we letting even more fat illegal people into this country?

It is time for Americas to get serious.  It is time for us to ban fat naked people from protesting.

What Would Jesus Do?

Madonna220506_228x306

WWJD?  Would he get mad?  Would he curse the fool?  Or would he weep for the lost soul.  That's what Madonna is, lost.  Weep for her.

One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other...

Gal_1Gal_2What do these two gals have in common?

One of these gals is not like the other
One of these gals is just not the same
One of these gals is blonde and rather pretty
One of these gals is free and that’s a shame

Both are pedophiles!  Both are school teachers who had sexual relations with boys under the age of fifteen, but that’s where the similarities end!

Guess who got off scott free and who got hard time?  That's right boys and girls, the pretty pedophile is free as a bird and the other pedophile is in jail!  The prosecutor refused to charge and the judge dismissed the case!  But remember, Justice is blind!  Yes it is!  JUSTICE IS BLIND!  BLIND, BLIND, BLONDE, BLONDE...
Psyche!

P.S. House arrest and a braclet.  Tht's what she got.  O.k?  If she were a man, would the sentence be the same?

The Girl Who Cried Wolf

Cynthia_mckinneyThank you Representative McKinney!

You have single handedly brought the bogus charge of racism to its knees.
You along with Kyane "Bush don’t like black people" West and other
race pimps have overused the charge of “racism” to the point of absurdity.  When Representative Tom Delay can call you a racist, you know that now even racist don’t believe that they’re racist!

You are a jewel of colossal stupidity.  And no Tim, I don’t believe that Tom Delay is a racist.  But you do and so there it is!

George Carlin's view on Aging

George_carlin_1My lovely wife reminded me that by the end of this year I was going to be 42 years old.  For some reason the realization stunned me!   I've been stuck on 40 for over a year now!

Here is the latest from Mr. Carlin, enjoy!

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we’re kids?  If you’re less than 10 years old, you’re so excited about aging that you think in fractions.  “How old are you?”  “I’m four and a half!”  You’re never thirty-six and a half.  You’re four and a half, going on five!

That’s the key.

You get into your teens, now they can’t hold you back.  You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead.  “How old are you?”  “I’m gonna be 16!”  You could be 13, but hey, you’re gonna be 16!  And the greatest day of your life – you become 21.  Even the words sound like a ceremony..
YOU BECOME 21.

But then you turn 30.  Oooohh, what happened there?  Makes you sound like bad milk!  He TURNED; we had to throw him out.  There’s no fun now, you’re Just a sour-dumpling.  What’s wrong?  What’s changed?

You BECAME 21, you TURNED 30, then you’re PUSHING 40.
Whoa!  Put on the brakes, it’s all slipping away.  Before you know it, you REACHED 50 and your dreams are gone.

But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60.

You’ve built up so much speed that you HIT 70!  After that it’s a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday!

You get into your 80’s and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you REACH bedtime.  And it doesn’t end there.  Into the 90’s, you start going backwards; I Was JUST  92.”

Then a strange thing happens.  If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again.  “I’m 100 and a half!”  May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

"Happy Birthday Miriam Thorn!"

And the Oscar goes to… Racism!

OscarGeorge Clooney ticked me off!

I’m still fuming over his; “We gave Hattie McDaniel an Oscar when blacks still had to sit in the balcony”. That line is so full of self-righteous crap!

First a few disclaimers.  I didn’t watch The Academy Awards on Sunday.  I never watch the Academy Awards.  I hate the Academy Awards.  I’ve been boycotting the Academy Awards ever since “The Color Purple” got shafted out of fourteen possible awards!  How does that happen?  The movie was brilliant!  It was and still remains a classic, a tour de force and it lost to… I bet you don’t even remember do you?  Well I do, it lost to “OUT OF FREAKING AFRICA!"   WHAT A JOKE!!!  It still makes me fume!   Merrell Streep and Robert Redford stumbled through an utterly forgettable movie with utterly pitiful performances.  The movie wasn’t deserving of a best picture Oscar.  There is no way around it.  What happened that night to Spielberg and the cast of Color Purple was some type of –ism and I despise the Academy for making me say it but, there still are racist institutions in America, primarily the ones run by liberals or dominated by liberalism!

For instance... The Academy.

Cloony’s talking about “we gave Hattie McDaniel an Oscar when…” who the hell does he think he is! Shouldn’t he have said “when we awarded the Oscar to…" didn’t she earn it?  This is exactly what I mean by liberalism and the soft bigotry of low expectations.  "We gave, while blacks still had to sit in the balcony.”  What a load of self-righteous crap!  Crap!  Crap!  Crap!!!!  Oh George, how very big of you!

You “gave” Hattie an Oscar for what?  Playing the part of a compliant, wet nurse, slave!  “I don't know nothin’ ‘bout birthin’ no babies.”  That line became part of the American lexicon, thanks George!  And thanks for “giving” Haley Berry an Oscar for playing the part of a poor black woman (with beautifully straight white teeth) who after dutifully visiting her husband for years (he was in prison, on death row), started screwing the racist prison guard (her husbands executioner) in some of the most graphic sex scenes ever filmed.   Nice.  Again, thank-you George…

Yeah and thank-you for “giving” the Oscar to Denzel Washington (on the very same night no less) for his portrayal of a corrupt evil ass cop in the movie "Training Day!"  Instead of “giving” it to him for his portrayal of "Malcolm X", which like "The Color Purple", was brilliant!  And while I’m at it, thank you so very much George for “giving" us “'It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" for song of the year! That’s just f$#^* great!

Maybe next year you could “chose”  “We shall overcome!”

George Clooney is the worst kind of lefty; a soft, pretty bigot.  And the Academy is an institution steeped in bigotry and racism.  Even when they try to do it right they screw it up.  I heard that the movie Crash won best picture…

How appropriate for oh, so many reasons.

P.S.  Yes, I conveniently omitted Jamie Fox and Sidney Poitier.  So what?  I still hate the Academy.
