This morning, as I was watching T.V. in the barbershop, Divorce Court was preempted by the presidents Rose Garden speech. I couldn’t watch it. The very sight of the president agitated me. The reason Bush had to have a press conference is because he knew that he had pissed me off. I am the base that he is trying to reassure with the “trust me” bull crap. Did he have to have a “trust me” press conference with Judge Roberts? No. Why? Because Judge Roberts had a record. I don’t trust Bush on this issue because I shouldn’t have to. He told me that he was going to appoint someone in the tradition of Anthony Scaliea and Clarence Thomas did he? Gee, don’t know yet, I’ll have to wait ten years to find out and that’s the problem. I should know right now!
O.k., time to play the race card. Barber Shop! Why did I have to be in the Barbershop!!! Every week for the last 20+ years I have been going to the same barber to get my haircut. Now, I am a politically outspoken guy and it is no secret that my barber and I are at odds when it comes to politics. Not just me and my barber, but me and the whole d*%# barbershop! Being one of 3 black conservative in the state of Wisconsin, it comes with the territory.
When the Pres popped on the T.V. somebody yelled “Hey shut up, James T.’s mans on the tube, lets see what he has to say about not putting that Black judge on the court!”
And there it was.
This is why I feel so betrayed by the President. He swung and missed! He had the opportunity to hit the trifecta of judicial appointments: Female, Black & CONSERVATIVE! Holy could of, should of, Why Didn’t You!!!
I believe that over the term of his presidency Mr. Bush has put forth a valiant effort to make inroads to the black community. The appointments to his cabinet have been stellar! He has reached out to African Americans on numerous occasions and I really do believe that he is a sincere and righteous man, however he BLEW IT on the biggest play of the game. Like Robert Ferguson (the sorry wide receiver of the hapless Green Bay Packers) who let the opposition snatch the ball right out of his hands, on Monday Night Football no less! Bush, by not appointing someone like Janice Rodgers Brown to the Supreme Court, let the Dems snatch ball right out of his hands by losing the opportunity to let Black conservative fight for themselves on a national stage. Can you imagine the likes of Senators Ted Kennedy and Herb Kohl taking on the likes of Janice Rodgers Brown? How many Black Democrats would be willing to support two rich, old, really white trust fund lefties as they lecture the brilliant daughter of a share cropper on the finer points of racism and sexism in this country. Would have loved to see it!
The spectacle would have opened the eyes of millions.
For twenty years I have been fighting the good fight. Some of the “Barbershop battles” that I have fought in have been legendary. But today I was silenced. Stabbed in the back by the very man whose water I carried. In the barbershop.
At least I looked good.
